Lincoln cathedral was once the tallest building in the world from the year 1300 to 1549. Surviving the spire falling down in the 16th century, a fire, an earthquake and having spires removes in 1807, Lincoln cathedral has proven it can withstand a variety of events. It is now much safer but still equally as magnificent.
During World War 1, The first tank was designed and built in Lincoln. It was customary at the time to do the majority of fighting in the trenches, but in addition, the first tank was used in the Battle of Flers-Courcelette in September 1916. By 1918 they became a common fighting method with over 2600 manufactured.
The Magna Carta is over 800 years old. Only four copies of the Magna Carta remain after they were sealed by King John in 1215. Rebellious barons forced the King to sign, to limit the power of the monarchy and uphold the rights of the individual. Today, a copy of the Magna Carta can be found at Lincoln Castle, on loan from Lincoln Cathedral.
